Championing Refill & Reuse in Kenya: Baskets Kenya at the Greenpeace Africa Festival

Kenya is steadily moving toward a zero-waste future, and the momentum grew even stronger at the recent Refill & Reuse Festival hosted by Greenpeace Africa at the National Museums of Kenya.
As Baskets Kenya, we were proud to participate and showcase how natural, reusable baskets support a cleaner, plastic-free Kenya.

Why the Refill & Reuse Movement Matters for Kenya

The refill and reuse approach is gaining attention across Kenya because it offers real, practical solutions to the country’s growing plastic pollution crisis. For everyday consumers, it means choosing reusable containers instead of disposable plastics, supporting products that are repairable, refillable or biodegradable, and adopting habits that reduce both household waste and long-term environmental damage. Kenya has already taken bold steps by banning single-use plastics, but embracing refill and reuse systems brings the country even closer to a circular, low-waste economy.

Baskets Kenya’s Role in the Refill & Reuse Festival

At the event, Baskets Kenya exhibited a range of handmade, eco-friendly alternatives created from Kenya’s natural fibres, including:

  • Sisal baskets for home storage

  • Banana fibre baskets as reusable household organizers

  • Palm and raffia designs replacing plastic bins and containers

  • Durable woven baskets that support refill-and-reuse lifestyles

Visitors were excited to learn how switching from plastic storage to biodegradable, handwoven baskets reduces waste while supporting local artisans.

Our products attracted families, students, environmental enthusiasts and organizations looking for sustainable alternatives made in Kenya.

Key Highlights We Learned from the Greenpeace Africa Event

The festival taught us a lot about where Kenya is headed in terms of sustainability. First, it became clear that many Kenyans truly want eco-friendly options. People are ready to switch to natural, reusable products as long as they are practical, affordable and easy to find.

We also saw how much value there is in our own local materials. Fibres like sisal, palm leaves and banana fibre are not just traditional ,they are some of the most environmentally friendly alternatives to plastics. They prove that Kenya already has what it needs to create low-waste solutions.

Another important lesson was the power of working together. The event brought artisans, small businesses, environmental groups and policymakers into one space, and the conversations showed how collaboration can drive real change in reducing single-use plastics.

And finally, many people were excited to learn that refill and reuse systems actually help save money. Durable, refillable products last longer and reduce the amount of waste a household produces, which means fewer replacements and lower long-term costs.

Overall, the event reminded us that when communities come together, understand the issues and embrace simple daily changes, Kenya can move confidently toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
